Group art exhibition Shrines opens this Friday October 12th and is the debut exhibition of the Laundry Lung Collective space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. Curators Nicole Aiello and Joanne Ambia came out to Superchief Gallery’s opening of CREEPERS last week, so we’re returning the favor and showing some love and support for fellow Brooklyn art fam. The show features 30 very talented young emerging artists, many of whom are native New Yorker’s and alumni of SUNY Purchase. Shrines explores the literal, conceptual and ambiguous meanings of the word Shrine through art making. A diverse group of artists who have submitted work oriented around one central theme.

Shrines often contain idols, relics, or other such objects associated with a figure being venerated. They can be a place of religious devotion or commemoration. Each work presented explores a different interpretation of shrines, some literal and others figurative. Painter Theresa Daddezio interprets shrines as an intangible occurrence, analogous with the complexity of bio-molecular forms, and uses anthropomorphic structures to create vivid detailed oil paintings. Some artists, such as Andrea Marceles and Linda Paúla Marcos made shrines with parts of their bodies and fragments of their identity, recalling the transitory ephemeral nature of time, innocence and growth. Michael Guirato’s drawing are a comical interpretation, his statement explains the extent of his self worship and worth. His piece is a representation of himself, worshiping himself. Each artist in the show has their own take on what shrines mean to them, and as a whole the show should be praised because its going to be the bomb, y’all.

Artists Include:

Eva Wildes, Katherine Valentine, Jules Slutsky, Samantha Silverman, Caroline Schub, Sophie Samul, Allan Sachs, Ann Pajuväli, Linda Marcos, Chiara Marinai, Andrea Marceles, Keith Dragon Mackie, Emma Kohlmann, Ester Kislin, Sally Jerome, Jen Hitchings, Harold Hernandez, Blanca Guerrer, Michael Giurato, Ivan Forde, Theresa Daddezio, Pansum Cheng, Cynthia Chang, Beau Chamberlain, Gary Carlson, Chloe Beck, Alex Ariza, Joanne Ambia and Nicole Aiello.
