I first heard about The Hole when urban explorer, Nathan Kensinger wrote about it on his blog in 2009. I’m still not sure exactly where it is, but it’s somewhere out in the inaccessible steaming wasteland of outer-Brooklyn. Its seclusion as well as its reputation as an Italian Mafia body-dumping ground make it one of the most intriguing weird neighborhoods in New York City. There’s also a whole other aspect of the neighborhoods mythology about an all-black cowboy gang called ‘The Federation of Black Cowboys,’ who have since relocated.
Our buddy Adam Lichtenstein went down to The Hole to see what’s happening in the neighborhood this year.

This little slice of Americana sits on the border between Brooklyn & Queens, just north of Lindenwood. Once the stomping grounds of Mike Tyson, Mafia Dons; now The Hole is most known for being a fucking hole. At 30 feet below ‘grade’ and no sewage system, it floods so often that most residents have at least 1 boat. These 5,6 blocks are also notorious for being the Italian Mafia’s favorite dead body drop off. Over the last 30+ years there have been a platter of mob-related corpses found here.
Then there’s the Black Cowboy Federation, which is just as awesome as it sounds – old school black dudes with six shooters, tanning leather and riding horses. This is some of the most under appreciated bad assery in all of New York. The sad story is they used to be a huge part of the community, but lost a lot of their land on this side of Linden Ave. Nowadays they keep to the ranch, thus crushing my dream of wrangling cattle while yelling that the WuTang clan is NOT to be fucked with.
To surmise, The Hole continues to get deeper (metaphorical as a muh). The fundraisers are over, the cowboys have gone home and it smells like rotting zombie pussy. This place is a post apocalyptic nightmare/ wet dream. I can’t wait to go back.
