We went to jewelry designer Chris Habana’s SS13 showing at The Out Hotel for September’s fashion week. The event was held in the lush outdoor courtyard of The Out’s spa complex. We rolled through to the exhibition with our friend and collaborator, Johnny Sagan of Snowy Wilderness who partook in the creation of the beautiful plexi display cases housing Habana’s newest collection.
As expected, the Spring/Summer 2013 collection was dark and beautiful, focusing on classically Habana-esque geometry, imagery and heavy metals. For this season, Habana took an organic and more colorful turn, with the inclusion of hand painted bones and vertebrae caged in metal, some bedecked with intergalactic jewels, while other pieces stayed to Habana’s classic, ‘1990s-teenager-meets-today’s-rave-kid’ look. The pieces focused on the idea of darkened fantasy and growth. A friend of the designer and fellow accessories designer Zana Bayne spoke of Habana’s collection as “building on his previous pieces and his core works. But, this one is like a fantasy garden, sort of an Evil Nature”.
The entire installation went with the theme and new organic design element, featuring moss, water falls and natural green tones through, creating a really harmonious presentation. It was effective, and I was left wanting all of it by the end of the show. The man’s a whirlwind of dark fantastical glamour. Hats off Mr. Habana, you killed it!
