SCTV GOES THERE: FEAR OF THE DARK

November 18th, 2009

SUPERCHIEF.tv is a real magazine that does real journalism, so we sent a correspondent to investigate a thing that we heard was happening.  INDEPENDENT MEDIA BABY!

The Leonid meteors were scheduled to appear over North America last night. Since Tuesday night disco bowling got cancelled, I figured I might as well check it out.

I used my fancy digital camera to take this incredible photo of the meteors.  It’s a two second exposure and I learned how to do that in photography school.

We’re living in the technological age though, so if you want to see some more long exposure pictures of the Leonids just google it! For more of my photos click “CONTINUE READING THIS” below.

The weather was perfect, but that didn’t change the fact that I can see the largest source of light pollution in the world from my apartment. I looked at google maps and narrowed possible viewing locations to Van Cortlandt Park (home of the ‘Van Cortlandt Rangers’) or Coney Island (home of ‘The Warriors’).

Even though the Warriors are a more formidable gang as demonstrated by the 1979 documentary about them, I decided Coney Island might be a better viewpoint. It’s darker and scarier which is perfect for watching the sky.

I had originally planned to lie on a blanket on the sand, looking up at the majesty of the cosmic phenomenon with a limitless expanse of ocean at my feet. It was however, 3 AM in the middle of November at Coney Island. The beach was cluttered with trash and occupied by homeless people, with a biting wind that was so cold I had to wrap the blanket around me to prevent from freezing to death.

Serious moment though, it’s fucked that so many homeless people sleeping on the beach in the winter. Don’t they have shelters in this city any more?

After a brief hotdog eating contest, and when some drunk girls with a point and shoot camera showed up, I decided it was time to head home. I saw something incredible and unworldly, and I was reminded of the beauty that is New York City.

Since you’ll probably be in your house on the internet for the next 7 months, I promise to brave the cold and take pictures of the outdoors for you. Trust SCTV as your one and only news source and buy our DVD. Wait that’s not out yet? Well save up some money for when it is.

Peace,
